O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], and raise his station among those who are guided. Grant his successors from among those who remain behind. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and illuminate it for him.
Allahumma-ghfir li-fulan, wa-rf'a darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wa-khlufhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, wa-ghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wa-fsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu feehi.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is suitable to be recited whenever one remembers a deceased person, especially during times of grief, after attending a funeral, or on occasions like the anniversary of their passing. It's particularly poignant when seeking Allah's mercy for someone whose life was dedicated to a specific profession that served others, like a doctor who healed the sick or a farmer who fed the community. The prayer acknowledges their worldly efforts and asks Allah to reward them accordingly in the hereafter.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and a sincere intention for the deceased. You can substitute 'fulan' (meaning 'so-and-so') with the actual name of the deceased person. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah to overlook their shortcomings, elevate their status, and grant them comfort in their grave. It is beneficial to make this dua with a group after the burial, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught specific supplications for the deceased at that time.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates several profound requests for the deceased: seeking Allah's forgiveness, raising their rank among the righteous, ensuring their legacy and family are cared for, and granting them ease and light in the grave. By specifically acknowledging their life's work and seeking reward for it, we hope to remind Allah of their contributions and seek His abundant mercy for them, just as He rewards sincere efforts made in His service. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of supplicating for our deceased loved ones, as our prayers can benefit them greatly.
Source & Authentication
The version in Sahih Muslim 964 is: 'When you offer the funeral prayer over a dead person, supplicate for him that he may be confirmed, for he is being questioned now.' The fuller dua recited by companions often included elements similar to the one presented here, seeking forgiveness and ease in the grave. The essence is to seek Allah's mercy and confirmation for the deceased during the critical time of questioning in the grave.
