O Allah, forgive [this person's name], have mercy upon him, grant him safety, pardon him, honor his reception, make his entrance spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is recited when offering funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) or when visiting the grave of a deceased Muslim. It is especially pertinent when aware that the deceased may have owed Zakat, as this dua asks for Allah's comprehensive forgiveness and mercy, which encompasses all rights, both owed to Allah and to others.
How to Read
When reciting for a specific individual, replace '[fulan]' with the deceased person's name. If reciting the general form, the pronoun 'hu' (him) should be used. Ensure the intention is sincere, seeking Allah's mercy for the departed soul. The prayer is best recited with the proper pronunciation and understanding of its meaning, ideally after the funeral prayer or at the grave.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is the established supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for a deceased Muslim. It is a beautiful expression of seeking Allah's all-encompassing mercy for the departed. While this specific dua doesn't directly address the unpaid Zakat in terms of its fulfillment, by asking Allah to 'pardon him' and 'cleanse him from sins', we are imploring Allah to overlook any shortcomings, including potential unpaid obligations. Furthermore, it is crucial for the living to fulfill the unpaid Zakat on behalf of the deceased, as this directly settles the debt owed to Allah and the poor.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the funeral prayer, and he recited (recited the dua given above).
