Dua for a Deceased Person with Unfulfilled Vows

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased], have mercy on him, grant him security, pardon him, honor his hospitality, make his entrance spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This supplication is particularly poignant when praying for a deceased person who may have left behind unfulfilled vows or oaths. It's a comprehensive prayer for forgiveness, mercy, and ease in the hereafter, suitable to be recited anytime you remember the deceased, especially during gatherings for remembrance or after offering charity on their behalf.

How to Read

When reciting this dua, it is essential to focus on the meaning and the sincerity of your supplication. Replace 'fulan' (or the Arabic equivalent in the full version) with the name of the deceased. It is recommended to make this dua with humility and a hopeful heart, seeking Allah's immense mercy for the departed. You can recite this individually or as part of a group prayer for the deceased.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates several vital pleas for the deceased: forgiveness of sins, mercy from Allah, comfort in the grave, and entrance into Paradise. While this specific hadith doesn't directly address 'unfulfilled vows,' the comprehensive nature of the dua and the general Islamic principle that a believer's supplication benefits the deceased make it highly relevant. It’s understood that any good deed, including earnest dua, performed by a living Muslim for a deceased Muslim, benefits the latter, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: a continuous charity, knowledge that is benefited from, and a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). Therefore, praying for forgiveness and mercy for the deceased, especially if they might have any outstanding obligations, is a profound act of compassion.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from `Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer, and he kept standing and said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and make his grave spacious. O Allah, cleanse him with water, snow and hail. O Allah, purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. O Allah, grant him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family. O Allah, admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave' or 'from the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed for him until I wished that I were in his place.'
