O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased] and have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Give him a better home than his home, a better family than his family, and a better spouse than his spouse. Enter him into Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire. Protect him from the trial of the grave, settle his debts, and fulfill his vows.
When to Read
This comprehensive supplication can be recited whenever a Muslim wishes to make dua for a deceased person, particularly when it is known that the deceased had unfulfilled vows or debts. It's appropriate to recite it during funeral prayers, at the grave, or anytime one remembers the deceased and wishes to seek Allah's mercy for them.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning of the words and the deep need for Allah's forgiveness and mercy for the departed soul. If reciting for someone specific, you can mention their name where indicated in the Arabic text. Making dua for others, especially the deceased, is a profound act of worship and compassion.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates the best of what we can ask for a deceased person. It covers forgiveness, mercy, well-being, a good reception in the hereafter, spaciousness in the grave, purification from sins, a better abode and companions in Paradise, protection from the Hellfire and the grave's trials, and crucially, the settling of their debts and fulfillment of their vows. Fulfilling the vows of the deceased through dua is a great service to them, as it alleviates their burden in the grave and on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, their deeds stop except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua is a direct form of supplication for the deceased.
