Deceased
Sahih HadithThe Book of Funerals (Kitab Al-Jana'iz) 963b

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him ease, and pardon him. Make his entry [to the grave] noble and expand his place of entry. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as You cleanse a white garment from impurity. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

When we lose someone dear, especially one who faced immense hardship and persecution for standing firm in their faith, our hearts ache with a unique sorrow. In such moments, our strongest solace and our most impactful act for them is sincere dua. This beautiful, comprehensive supplication is recited during the Janazah prayer (funeral prayer) for the deceased. Beyond the formal prayer, you can—and should—make this dua, or parts of it, whenever you remember them and feel moved to supplicate for them. Imagine the solace it brings knowing you are asking Allah to grant them the highest reward for their steadfastness and sacrifice. It’s particularly poignant to recite this for those who died as a result of their faith, reminding us of their elevated status and our profound hope for their ultimate reward.

How to Read

Recite this dua with full sincerity and humility, seeking Allah's infinite mercy and grace for the deceased. While the comprehensive version is typically recited during the Janazah prayer as part of the formal supplication, you can make this dua individually at any time for the deceased. Raise your hands in supplication, a sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ outside of the prescribed prayer, and call upon Allah with certainty that He hears and responds. Reflect on each phrase, allowing your heart to connect with the deep meaning of asking for forgiveness, mercy, ease, and a blessed abode in Paradise.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this comprehensive dua for a deceased person carries immense spiritual weight, especially for someone who endured persecution for their faith. By making this supplication, you are directly imploring Allah for His vast mercy and forgiveness for the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ himself taught this dua, highlighting its comprehensive nature in seeking Allah's favor. It asks for purification from sins, protection from the torment of the grave and Hellfire, and a magnificent dwelling in Paradise. For those who faced persecution for their belief, we have a strong hope that their suffering elevated their status, and this dua serves as our plea to Allah to grant them the highest stations in Jannah, rewarding their patience and sacrifice. Our sincere dua for them is a means of increasing their good deeds and light in their grave, as mentioned in various narrations about the impact of a believer's prayers for another.

Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) supplicating over a deceased person, and I memorized his supplication: 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him ease, and pardon him. Make his entry [to the grave] noble and expand his place of entry. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins as You cleanse a white garment from impurity. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.' Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made such a lengthy supplication that I wished I had been that deceased person.
