Dua for a Deceased Person Who Was Oppressed

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his استقبال (guests/arrival), make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Exchange his dwelling for a better one, his family for a better one, and his spouse for a better one. Enter him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir li-hu wa-rham-hu wa 'aafi-hi wa-'afu 'an-hu wa akrim nuzula-hu wa wassi' mudkhala-hu, wa-ghsil-hu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqi-hi minal-khataaya kama nuqqiyas-thawbul-abyadu minad-danas, wa abdil-hu daaran khayran min daari-hi, wa ahlan khayran min ahli-hi, wa zawjan khayran min zawji-hi, wa adkhil-hul-jannata wa a'idh-hu min 'adhab-il-qabri wa min 'adhabin-nar.

When to Read

This dua is a comprehensive supplication for any deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant when the deceased may have suffered oppression in this life, as the requests for forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and protection from punishment are universal needs for all, and especially for those who faced hardship. We can recite this dua at the funeral prayer, at the graveside, or anytime we remember the deceased and wish to benefit them.

How to Read

This dua should be recited with sincerity and a focus on the mercy of Allah. Imagine the deceased in their grave and beseech Allah for His immense kindness. Make sure to pronounce the Arabic words clearly. If you are leading others in dua, do so with a clear voice. Otherwise, you can recite it individually, raising your hands if appropriate, as is customary for supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates profound requests for the deceased's afterlife. It asks for Allah's forgiveness and mercy, which are paramount for a good outcome. The request for well-being ('aafiyah) and pardon ('afw) addresses any shortcomings. Honoring their arrival and making their grave spacious are pleas for comfort in the barzakh (intermediate state). The purification from sins is a vital step towards Paradise, just as washing removes physical impurities. Exchanging worldly possessions for better eternal ones is a core aspiration. Finally, the dua seeks protection from the torment of the grave and the Fire, the ultimate fears for any soul. By making this dua, we are actively participating in benefiting our departed loved ones and fulfilling a responsibility towards them.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: The Prophet (peace be upon him) led the funeral prayer, and I memorized from his supplication as he was saying: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him and grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water and snow and hail. Purify him from his sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Exchange his home for a better home, and his family for a better family, and his wife for a better wife. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave' or 'from the torment of the Fire.' (He said:) And I doubted about that last one. So I said: O Allah's Apostle, may Allah bless you! Supplicate to Allah for me. He said: 'O Allah, forgive him, make him firmly established, and admit him to Paradise.'
