O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, and grant him well-being and pardon him, and honor his reception, and make his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Replace his worldly home with a better home, and his family with a better family, and his spouse with a better spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive supplication, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his companions for praying over the deceased, encompasses several key aspects of seeking Allah's mercy. It asks for forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and pardon, addressing the soul's potential shortcomings. The imagery of washing with water, snow, and hail signifies purification from sins, likened to whitening a soiled garment, indicating a fresh start. Asking for better provisions in the hereafter—a better home, family, and spouse—pleads for Allah's best for the departed. Crucially, it seeks protection from the torments of the grave and the Fire, the two most feared punishments, offering immense comfort to the deceased.

Narrated Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i: The Prophet (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer, and I memorized from his prayer. He said (while reciting the prayer): 'Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataaya kama nuqqiyat-thawbul-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhu al-jannata, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhab-il-qabri wa 'adhab-in-nar. (O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him, and honour his reception, and make his grave spacious, and wash him with water and snow and hail, and cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt, and give him a house better than his house, and a family better than his family, and spare him the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire). He said: And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed a statement which I wished I could have memorized. They (the companions) said: We wished that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had passed a statement. So he (the narrator) said: It was 'Ab wath-thawb al-abyad min ad-danasi (as a white garment is cleansed from dirt).
