O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his resting place, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
When to Read
This supplication (dua) is recommended for recitation when a person passes away. It is a comprehensive prayer for the deceased, seeking Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and protection for them in the hereafter. The specific mention of a person who lied frequently does not necessitate a different dua; rather, the general supplication for all deceased Muslims is appropriate. Our hope is that Allah's boundless mercy will encompass all their shortcomings.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. It is best to say the name of the deceased in place of '[Fulan]'. If you are unsure of their gender, you can adjust the pronouns accordingly (e.g., 'warhamha' for female). The intention should be to seek Allah's vast forgiveness and mercy for the deceased, acknowledging that only Allah has full knowledge of their deeds and ultimate fate. It is also permissible to make this dua for someone whose deeds you may have known to be less than ideal, as Allah's mercy is greater than any sin.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates a profound request for the deceased, covering their spiritual purification, comfort in the grave, and ultimate reward in Paradise. It reflects the Islamic belief in the efficacy of dua for the deceased, as stated in the Quran: 'And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith...' (Al-Hashr 59:10). Reciting this shows compassion and fulfills a communal obligation towards fellow Muslims, regardless of their perceived flaws in this life. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is readily answered (Sahih Muslim 2732).
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Awf ibn Malik al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the funeral prayer, and he stood up and said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his resting place, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow and hail, and purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and grant him to enter Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave or the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'Fulan' (meaning a specific person) was mentioned in place of the word 'him'.
