Dua for a Deceased Person Who Died During a Calamity

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honor his reception and make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Give him an abode better than his former home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is a comprehensive plea to Allah for the deceased. It asks for forgiveness, mercy, and well-being, protection from the grave's torment, and entry into Jannah. Reciting it for a Muslim is a significant act of kindness and a fulfillment of our communal responsibility to one another, as the Prophet ﷺ stated: 'When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for him.' (Sahih Muslim 1631).

Source & Authentication

Narrated Awf ibn Maalik al-Ashja'i: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the funeral prayer and he prayed: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him. O Allah, make his grave spacious for him, and illuminate it for him.' He also said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him. O Allah, make his grave spacious for him, and illuminate it for him.' Then he said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him. O Allah, make his grave spacious for him, and illuminate it for him.' He said: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our children and our adults, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive from us, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die, cause him to die in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its reward and do not cause us to go astray after it.' (Sahih Muslim 963)
