Dua for a Deceased Person Struggling with Lies

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased], have mercy on him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This supplication is a general prayer for any deceased Muslim. While there isn't a specific dua prescribed for someone known to have been a compulsive liar, this comprehensive supplication covers seeking forgiveness and mercy from Allah, which is essential for everyone. When making dua for a deceased individual, especially one whose deeds may have been questionable, focusing on Allah's infinite mercy and forgiveness is our best approach. Recite this anytime you remember the deceased and wish to benefit them through your supplication, particularly after their passing or on occasions like Fridays.

How to Read

Make the intention to supplicate for the deceased. Replace '[Fulan]' with the actual name of the deceased person. Recite with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah for His mercy. It is best to face the Qiblah when making dua, though it is not a strict condition. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible. The core principle is sincerity and a genuine desire for the deceased's well-being in the hereafter.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for the deceased. It encompasses seeking Allah's forgiveness, mercy, well-being, and a good reception in the next life. By asking for purification from sins, a better abode, and protection from the grave and hellfire, we are asking for the ultimate success for the deceased. While lying is a serious sin, our supplication focuses on Allah's boundless mercy, which can encompass all sins. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua, offered by a living Muslim, falls under the category of a righteous child or a believer's prayer benefiting the deceased.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): She said, 'I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) to pray for a deceased person, and he said: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, our present and our absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You keep alive of us, keep him alive in Islam, and whoever You cause to die, let him die in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its reward and do not cause us to go astray after him.' (Sahih Muslim 963)
