Dua for a Deceased Person Mocked or Ridiculed

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him, have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a home better than his former home, a family better than his former family, and a spouse better than his former spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma-ghfir lahu wa-rhamhu wa 'aafihi wa-'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' madkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama yunaqqa-th-thawbu-l-abyadu minad-danasi, wa abdilhu dāran khayran min dārihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhul-jannata, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhab-il-qabri wa min 'adhabin-nar.

When to Read

This is the standard supplication taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for any deceased Muslim. It's particularly poignant when you know the deceased faced difficulties, mockery, or ridicule in this life. Reciting it with sincerity can be a way of asking Allah to compensate them in the hereafter for any hardship they endured, and to bestow upon them the dignity and honor they deserve.

How to Read

This dua is recited by the one praying. It's usually said during funeral prayers (Salat al-Janazah) or when visiting the grave. It can also be recited at any time as a personal supplication for the deceased. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, picturing Allah's mercy enveloping the departed soul. Imagine Allah replacing their worldly hardships with eternal ease and honor in Paradise.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua covers several crucial aspects of seeking Allah's mercy for the deceased: * **Forgiveness and Mercy:** Asking for Allah's forgiveness (`ghufran`) and mercy (`rahmah`) is the primary request. * **Well-being and Pardon:** Seeking `afiyah` (well-being, health, protection) and `afw` (pardon, overlooking of sins) offers comprehensive comfort. * **Honored Reception and Spacious Dwelling:** The phrases 'honor his reception' (`akrim nuzulahu`) and 'make his grave spacious' (`wassi' madkhalahu`) are specific requests for ease and comfort in the grave, a crucial transitional phase. * **Purification:** The comparison to washing with water, snow, hail, and cleansing a white garment emphasizes the complete purification from sins, essential for entering Paradise. * **Better Than the World:** Asking for a better home, family, and spouse signifies the eternal rewards of Paradise, which far surpass anything experienced in this worldly life. * **Protection from Punishment:** Seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave and the Fire is a vital safeguard for the deceased.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer for a dead man, and I memorized from his supplication as he said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, and grant him well-being and pardon him. O Allah, make his reception honorable and his grave spacious, and wash him with water, snow, and hail. O Allah, cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and give him a wife better than his wife, and admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the punishment of the grave or the punishment of the Fire.' He said: 'And I forgot the fourth request.' Then he (the narrator) said: 'And He (Allah) said: 'give him a home better than his home, and a family better than his family, and give him a wife better than his wife.'
