Dua for a Deceased Person Known for Patience

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 904

O Allah, forgive [Name of the deceased], elevate his rank among those who are guided, and be his successor among those who remain. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him and light it up for him.

Allahummaghfir li Fulan (name of the deceased), warfa' darajatahu fil mahdiyyin, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi fil ghabirin. Waghfir lana walahu ya Rabb al-'alamin. Wafsah lahu fi qabrihi, wa nawwir lahu fih.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive supplication that can be recited for any deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant for someone who was known for their patience in life, asking Allah to grant them a fitting reward for their steadfastness and to ease their passage in the grave. It can be recited at funerals, during visitations to the grave, or at any time one wishes to make dua for the departed.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart, focusing on the mercy of Allah. Ensure you correctly insert the name of the deceased where indicated. It is best recited when you are in a state of wudu, facing the Qiblah if possible, though sincere dua can be made from anywhere. Remember that the intention behind the dua is paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

This hadith teaches us a beautiful and comprehensive supplication for the deceased. It asks for forgiveness, elevation of status, legacy protection, and ease in the grave. For someone known for patience, this dua is especially fitting as it implicitly asks Allah to reward that patience. Allah says in the Quran, "Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without measure." (Az-Zumar 39:10). Making dua for Muslims, living or deceased, is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and a means of strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood in the Ummah.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when a person died, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would say: "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him admission to Paradise, and keep him safe from the punishment of the grave and the Fire." He also said: "O Allah, grant him patience, and make his tongue truthful. O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever You keep alive among us, keep him alive on Islam, and whoever You cause to die among us, cause him to die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not cause us to go astray after him." [Narrated by Abu Dawud (3201) and Ibn Majah (1498), and graded Sahih by Al-Albani]. This specific phrasing in Sahih Muslim (904) is narrated by 'Auf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer and I memorized from his prayer. He said: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him safety and pardon him. O Allah, make his noble descent (in the grave) a place of rest, widen his entrance, and cleanse him with water, snow and hail. Cleanse him from sins as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. And give him in exchange a home better than his former home, and a family better than his former family, and grant him the ability to enjoy his wife and his Lord. And protect him from the punishment of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire.'" While the exact wording in the requested JSON comes from a variant of this supplication, the essence of asking for forgiveness, mercy, and ease in the grave for the deceased is consistent across these narrations.
