Dua for a Deceased Person Known for Innovation in Religion

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive [name of the deceased], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail, purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This is a general supplication for any deceased Muslim. While the specific phrase for innovation might not be in this exact wording, the core plea for forgiveness and mercy is universally applicable. When a person known for innovation passes away, we supplicate for Allah's mercy upon them, trusting in Allah's infinite justice and compassion. We avoid judging their deeds and focus on asking Allah to forgive their shortcomings and grant them Paradise. It is permissible and encouraged to make dua for any Muslim, regardless of their actions, as their final state is known only to Allah.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with the intention of seeking Allah's mercy for the deceased. Replace 'fulan' with the name of the deceased person. It is best to say this with conviction, reflecting on the transient nature of this life and our need for Allah's forgiveness. The etiquette of dua is to be humble, turn towards the Qiblah if possible, and raise your hands.

Virtues & Benefits

Making dua for the deceased is a continuous act of charity for them, as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who supplicates for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). By making this dua, we fulfill this obligation and hope for Allah's mercy to encompass the deceased, regardless of their personal shortcomings or innovations in religion, as Allah's mercy is vast and He is the Most Forgiving.

Source & Authentication

The hadith in Sahih Muslim 963 describes the specific supplication the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught for a deceased person, which forms the basis of this dua. The full text narrates: 'When you offer the funeral prayer over a dead person, say: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old ones, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever among us You keep alive, let him keep Islam alive on them, and whoever You cause to die, cause him to die with faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of the reward for him and do not make us go astray after him.' The version provided is a more detailed supplication for the deceased, often used alongside or as a replacement for this general funeral prayer dua, focusing on personal forgiveness and well-being in the Hereafter.
