O Allah, forgive [Name] son of [Father's Name], have mercy upon him, grant him well-being, pardon him, honor his reception, make his grave spacious, cleanse him with water, snow, and hail. Purify him from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt. Grant him a dwelling better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
When to Read
This dua is recited when a Muslim passes away, regardless of their past deeds. While this specific wording is a general supplication for the deceased, we make it with the hope that Allah's boundless mercy encompasses everyone.
How to Read
When reciting for a specific individual, replace '[name]' with the deceased's first name and '[father's name]' with their father's name. If the father is unknown or deceased, one can say '[Name] ibn [Mother's Name]' or simply '[Name]'. The dua should be made with sincerity and hope in Allah's mercy. It is recommended to make dua for Muslims, living or dead, as it is a way to maintain the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood in faith.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua is a profound act of worship, seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for the deceased. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the importance of praying for those who have passed on, as our supplications can benefit them in the afterlife. Even for those who struggled with sins like gossip and slander, Allah's mercy is vast, and a sincere dua can be a means for their forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This dua embodies the hope of receiving such benefits.
