Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 904

O Allah, forgive [Name of deceased] son of [Father's name], and raise his rank among those who are guided. And leave behind for him offspring who will pray for him. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. And make his grave spacious and illuminate it for him.

Allahummaghfir li [name of deceased] ibn [name of father], warfa' darajatahu fil-mahdiyyeen, wakhlafhu fi 'aqibihi fil-ghabireen, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabb al-'alamin, wafsah lahu fi qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feeh

When to Read

This comprehensive du'a is particularly poignant for a deceased person who may have struggled with their religious practice or spiritual connection in life. It's a supplication offered by the living to seek Allah's mercy for the deceased, asking for forgiveness, guidance, and a comfortable resting place in the grave. It can be recited anytime, but is especially fitting during times of remembrance, such as on the anniversary of their passing, or when visiting the graveyard.

How to Read

Recite this du'a with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Ensure you correctly insert the name of the deceased and their father's name where indicated. It's best to recite this du'a with a pure heart, focusing on seeking Allah's immense mercy for the individual. While this specific wording is a well-established supplication taught to us, the essence of making du'a for the deceased is about sincere earnestness.

Virtues & Benefits

This du'a embodies the Islamic principle that the actions of the living can benefit the deceased. By asking for forgiveness and a good station for them, we are actively participating in their journey in the hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific supplication, highlighting its importance for the deceased. It acknowledges that no one is perfect, and Allah's mercy is vast, extending even to those who may have fallen short.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Umm Salamah that she said: I said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, what is it that I should say when I am at the graveside?' He said: 'Say: Assalamu 'alaykum Ahl al-Qubur, min al-mu'mineen wa al-Muslimeen, wa inna in sha' Allah bikum lahiqoon, as'alullaha lana wa lakum al-'afiyah.' (Peace be upon you, O dwellers of the graves, from among the believers and the Muslims. Verily, we shall join you, if Allah wills. I ask Allah to grant us and you safety.) This longer version is for general grave visits. The specific du'a mentioned above is a more detailed supplication for the deceased's forgiveness and status.
