Dua for a Deceased Person Burdened by Debt

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 963

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins just as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.

When to Read

This dua is a general supplication for any deceased Muslim. It is particularly poignant for someone who passed away while burdened by debt, as it asks Allah to cover all their shortcomings, both spiritual and worldly, including potentially unfulfilled obligations.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a heavy heart for the deceased. Focus on seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness for them. It can be recited individually or collectively after the funeral prayer, or at any time you remember the deceased and wish to send them the reward of your supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses a request for Allah's forgiveness, mercy, and protection for the deceased in this life and the hereafter. By asking for the removal of sins, comfort in the grave, and entry into Paradise, we strive to alleviate their burden and ease their transition. While this specific wording doesn't directly address debt payment, the overall request for Allah's grace is understood to encompass all difficulties the deceased may have faced, including the spiritual burden of unaddressed debts.

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a dead person, he would say: 'O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our children and our elders, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, let him live Islamically, and whoever of us You cause to die, let him die in faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its reward and do not make us fall into trial after them.' Another narration: ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught me this supplication to be said over the dead: 'O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him from sins just as a white garment is cleansed from dirt. Grant him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.'
