O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a home better than his former home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Enter him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire.
Allahumma-ghfir lahu war-hamhu wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bil-ma'i wath-thalji wal-baradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataya kama naqqayta-thawba-l-abyada min ad-danasi, wa abdilhu daran khayran min darihi, wa ahlan khayran min ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa adkhilhu-l-jannata, wa a'idh-hu min 'adhabi-l-qabri wa 'adhabi-n-nari.
When to Read
This supplication is perfect for reciting when a Muslim passes away, especially if they endured significant illness before their death. Recite with sincerity and focus, visualizing the mercy of Allah descending upon the deceased. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for yourself, making heartfelt requests. It reflects the prophetic guidance on seeking the best for our departed brothers and sisters.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from 'Awf bin Malik Al-Ashja'i that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) led the funeral prayer for a dead person, and he stood (in prayer) and said, "O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, grant him relief and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his grave spacious. Wash him with water, snow, and hail. Cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Give him a home better than his former home, a family better than his family, and a spouse better than his spouse. Enter him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave and the punishment of the Fire." He said, "Or he said, 'from the torment of the Fire.'" He (the narrator) said: "And the people said: 'And we may say the same for him.'" (Sahih Muslim 963)
