اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِأَبِي الْآنَ
O Allah, forgive my father now.
Allahummaghfir li abi al-'an
When to Read
This is a general supplication for a deceased parent, suitable to be recited at any time, especially after their passing, during times of remembrance, or as a regular practice to continue benefiting them in the afterlife. It's a beautiful way to fulfill the ongoing responsibility we have towards our parents.
How to Read
Recite with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Focus on the meaning and the deep love and respect you have for your parent. It can be recited individually, or as part of a group dua. There are no specific timings or postures required beyond sincerity and attention.
Virtues & Benefits
Continuing to pray for our deceased parents is a vital aspect of upholding their rights over us even after they have left this world. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ informed us that the deeds of the son of Adam cease with his death, except for three: a continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him. This dua falls under the category of a righteous child's prayer, which continues to benefit the deceased parent by seeking Allah's forgiveness and mercy for them, thereby raising their status in the hereafter.
Source & Authentication
A man asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): "What rights do my parents have over me that I must fulfill?" He said: "They are your Paradise and your Hellfire." (This hadith refers to fulfilling their needs in life and being good to them leads to Paradise, and neglecting them or displeasing them can lead to Hellfire). Another hadith states: "When a person dies, all their deeds end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Sahih Muslim 1631). While the specific wording 'Allahummaghfir li abi al-'an' is a direct supplication, the principle of seeking forgiveness for parents is well-established.
