اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ لَنَا فَرَطًا وَسَلَفًا وَأَجْرًا وَذُخْرًا
O Allah, make for us a precursor, a provision and a reward.
Allahumma-j'alhu lana faratan wa salafan wa ajran wa dhukhran
When to Read
This dua is recited by parents and loved ones upon the passing of a newborn or a miscarried child. It's a way to entrust the child to Allah's mercy and seek reward for the difficult trial.
How to Read
The dua is typically recited by the parents, or by others on their behalf, seeking Allah's blessings for the child and solace for the family. It should be said with sincerity, patience, and trust in Allah's wisdom.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua embodies a profound Islamic perspective on loss. Instead of despair, it seeks a connection with Allah and a hope for the hereafter. The terms 'faratan' (precursor) and 'salafan' (forerunner) signify that the child will be a means of salvation and a means for the parents to enter Paradise, having preceded them. 'Ajran' (reward) and 'dhukhran' (provision/treasure) highlight the immense recompense Allah promises for enduring such trials with faith and patience. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua in the context of a child dying before the age of accountability, assuring the parents of their child's intercession.

The Mother of the Believers, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), said: "A woman from among the people of Medina said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, should I not perform Tawaf around the Ka'bah for the two stillborn children of mine?' He said: 'If you had performed Tawaf around the Ka'bah for them, you would have surely completed the Tawaf. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: O ye who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger (47:33) ... 'A'ishah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should I not perform Tawaf around the Ka'bah for the two stillborn children of mine?' He said: 'The two stillborn children will be in the gates of Paradise, and it will be said to them: Enter Paradise.' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, should I not perform Tawaf around the Ka'bah for the two stillborn children of mine?' He said: 'Allahumma-j'alhu lana faratan wa salafan wa ajran wa dhukhran.' (O Allah, make for us a precursor, a provision and a reward)." Sahih Muslim 918.
