Dua for a Deceased Newborn or Miscarried Child

Deceased
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 918

O Allah, make it (this child) a precursor for us, and make it a source of reward and stored provision for us, and make it an intercessor accepted on our behalf.

Allahumma ij'alha lana faratan, waj'alha lana ajran wa dhukhran, waj'alha lana shafi'atan mutaqabbalatan

When to Read

This dua is recited when a child is born stillborn or is miscarried. It is a supplication for the parents to find solace, reward, and for the child to be a means of intercession for them in the hereafter.

How to Read

This dua can be recited by the parents or guardians. It is recommended to recite it with sincerity and a hopeful heart, seeking Allah's mercy and understanding for their loss. The wording addresses Allah directly regarding the child's role for the parents.

Virtues & Benefits

This hadith provides a beautiful supplication for parents who have lost a newborn or miscarried child. It transforms a moment of immense grief into an opportunity for spiritual growth and divine compensation. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek Allah's blessings even in loss: making the child a 'faratan' means a precursor or one who goes ahead, saving them for their parents in Paradise. It also ensures the child becomes a 'reward and stored provision,' meaning a source of immense good deeds for the parents, and crucially, an 'accepted intercessor,' a profound comfort that this little life can indeed be a means of elevation for their parents.

Source & Authentication

Abu 'Uthman an-Nahdi reported that the mother of Ibrahim (the son of the Prophet ﷺ) said to the Prophet ﷺ: 'O Messenger of Allah, do joy over Abu Ibrahim be in hell?' He said: 'O Umm Ibrahim, that is theULATION of the hypocrites.' Then he said: 'Is it not enough for us to pray for him that he went ahead of us?' And he said: 'O Allah, make it (this child) a precursor for us, and make it a source of reward and stored provision for us, and make it an intercessor accepted on our behalf.' And he said: 'As for the child of the Muslims, he will be brought to Ibrahim on the Day of Resurrection, and he will have hold of him, and he will enter him into Paradise.' [Note: The first part of the hadith regarding Abu Ibrahim is specific to him and context-dependent. The dua itself and the general principle of the child being a precursor and intercessor for Muslims are widely applicable. The phrasing 'make it (this child) a precursor' in this context refers to the child departing this world before the parents.]
