Dua for a Deceased Believer: Seeking Purification and Paradise

Deceased
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 1498

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You cause to live from among us, let him live upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, let him die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him.

Allahummaghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthana. Allahumma man ahaytayta-hu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman.

How to Read

Recite with sincerity and a heart full of hope in Allah's mercy. The funeral prayer has specific timings and etiquette, and this dua is an integral part of it. When reciting individually, focus on the meaning and supplicate earnestly.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is profound because it encompasses asking for Allah's forgiveness for the deceased, praying for their steadfastness on Islam and Iman during life and death, and seeking protection for ourselves from going astray after their passing. It acknowledges our collective responsibility as an Ummah to pray for one another, living and deceased.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'When you pray over the dead, be sincere in your supplication for them.' Then Abu Hurairah mentioned the supplication: 'Allahumma aghfir li-hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthana. Allahumma man ahaytayta-hu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman.
