Business & Work
Hasan HadithJami' at-Tirmidhi 3563

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ.

O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I am in no need of anyone other than You.

Allahumma-kfini bihalalika 'an haramika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwak.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly relevant when entering into any financial transaction, especially in our modern economic systems where interest (riba) is so pervasive. It's beneficial to recite it before engaging in contracts, investments, loans, or even simple purchases, to seek Allah's protection from falling into anything unlawful. Make it a habit before starting your day's business or whenever you are faced with a financial decision.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with conviction in your heart. Believe that Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) is the only one who can provide lawful sustenance and protect you from unlawful means. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly in supplication, as is the custom for dua. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah to keep your earnings pure and free from the taint of interest.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a direct plea to Allah for two critical blessings: lawful sustenance and independence from His creation. By asking to be sufficed with what is lawful, we acknowledge the immense blessings in halal income and seek protection from the spiritual and worldly harm of riba. Riba is considered one of the major sins in Islam, and seeking refuge from it through dua is a sign of taqwa (God-consciousness). This supplication also asks for richness through Allah's grace, reminding us that true contentment comes from Him alone, making us less reliant on the approval or help of others, and ultimately, less susceptible to compromising our faith for financial gain.

Source & Authentication

The hadith states that Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A debt-ridden servant came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my indebtedness has become too much for me and my affairs have become difficult.' So the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Shall I teach you some words to say, if you say them, Allah will remove your indebtedness, although it be as heavy as Mount Uhud?' Ali said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Say: O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful provision, and enrich me with Your bounty, so that I am not in need of anyone other than You.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3563). While the context of the hadith is debt, the principle of seeking lawful provision and sufficiency from Allah is universally applicable to all financial matters, including protection from riba.
