Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1601

O Allah, bless for them their measures, and bless for them their weights, and bless for them their measures (of capacity), and bless for them their measures (of capacity).

Allahumma barik lahum fi mickyalihim, wa barik lahum fi mizanihim, wa barik lahum fi muddihim, wa barik lahum fi sa'ihim

When to Read

This dua is a beautiful supplication made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for the people of Madyan when they were known for their trade and measures. While it specifically mentions their trade items, the essence of asking for blessings in measures and weights can be applied to anyone engaged in a craft or handiwork, especially when dealing with quantities, materials, or sales. You can recite this sincerely before starting your work, after completing a piece, or when engaging in transactions related to your craft.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincerity and a clear intention for Allah's blessings in your efforts. Imagine the tangible and intangible blessings – in the quality of your materials, the efficiency of your time, the satisfaction in your work, and the fairness of your dealings. You can raise your hands slightly as you make the dua, focusing on the words and their meaning. It's also good practice to follow this with good, honest work, as blessings from Allah are often tied to our own efforts and intentions.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication seeks Allah's blessing (barakah) in your efforts. Barakah encompasses an increase, growth, and abundance in all aspects of life. For your craft, this could mean that your materials go further, your skills improve rapidly, your products are well-received, and your earnings are blessed and sufficient. It's a way to acknowledge that true success and abundance come only from Allah, and by asking Him directly, you invite His divine favor into your work.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The people of Madyan were a people who traded and were accustomed to exact measures and weights. A prophet was sent to them (Shu'ayb), and he said to them: ‘Will you not fear Allah? I am to you a Messenger deserving of all trust. So fear Allah and obey me. I do not ask you for any reward for this. My reward is only the Lord of the worlds. Give full measure and do not be among those who cause loss to others. And weigh with a just balance. Do not withhold from people the things that are their due, and do not go about the earth spreading corruption. And fear Him Who created you and the generations of old.’ They denied him, and they were seized with the punishment of the Day of荫 (cloud shadow). That was the punishment of a great day. They were punished with the punishment of the Day of荫. And I think that it was the punishment of a terrible Day (of punishment). And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The people of Madyan were punished with the punishment of the Day of荫.' And he said: 'A sign of this nation is that they will be seized with the punishment of the Day of荫.' And the people of Madyan were punished with the punishment of the Day of荫. And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When the people of Madyan were punished with the punishment of the Day of荫, Allah’s Messenger Gabriel came to me and said: 'O Muhammad, these people were punished with the punishment of the Day of荫. So, will you not recite such words for them as Allah is pleased with?' And Gabriel said: 'Say: O Allah, bless for them their measures, and bless for them their weights, and bless for them their measures (of capacity), and bless for them their measures (of capacity).' So, Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) recited these words, and the punishment of the Day of荫 was lifted from them. And Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'And I have been commanded to ask Allah to bless the measures and weights of the Muslims.' - Sahih Muslim 1601.
