The Prophet's Dua for the Best of This World and the Next

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2720

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and secure my fears. O Allah, protect me from before me and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your might from being struck from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal 'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa aamin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadhni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yameeni wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi-'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This is a powerful comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it is particularly recommended after completing your obligatory prayers (fardh salah). Many scholars advise making this dua especially during the final part of the prayer, after the *tashahhud* and before the *tasleem*, as it's a time when supplications are more likely to be accepted.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full concentration. Understand the profound meaning of each phrase. 'Afiyah (well-being) encompasses protection from all harm and afflictions, both physical and spiritual, in this life and the next. Asking for 'Afw (pardon) is crucial as we are all prone to sin. Raising your hands in supplication (though not strictly required for every dua) can be done here, especially if you are making it after salah as an extension of your prayer.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is incredibly encompassing. By asking for 'Afiyah (well-being) in both worlds, you are seeking protection from all that could harm you, be it hardship, illness, trials, or punishment. It asks for contentment and peace in your worldly life and salvation in the Hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this to his uncle Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), highlighting its immense importance and comprehensive nature.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to Al-Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him): 'O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, I have granted you. Seek something from me.' Al-Abbas said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what shall I ask for?' He said: 'Ask Allah for 'Afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' Al-Abbas stayed for a day, then came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what shall I ask for?' He said: 'O Abbas, O uncle of the Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for 'Afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' He stayed for another day, then came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what shall I ask for?' He said: 'O Abbas, ask Allah for 'Afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' Then on the third day, he said: 'O Abbas, verily 'Afiyah is a great matter. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, no one has been given anything better than 'Afiyah after the certainty of faith.' (Then he narrated the dua). — Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3533, graded Hasan Sahih. Also found in Sahih Muslim 2720.
