The Prophet's Dua for Strength in Hardship, Recited After Prayer

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 4423

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the subjugation of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is specifically mentioned as being recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after his prayers. Imagine finishing your Salah, the connection with Allah at its peak. It's the perfect moment to turn to Him, seeking protection from the very things that can weigh down our hearts and minds: worry, sadness, inability to act, idleness, fear, and the heavy burden of debt and being overpowered by others.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart after completing your obligatory prayers (Fardh). Raise your hands (if you are praying alone or in a situation where it is appropriate after Salah) and utter these words, visualizing Allah's immense power to protect you. Reflect on each phrase, truly seeking refuge in Allah from these specific afflictions. It's not just about uttering the words, but feeling their weight and relying on Allah's promise of support.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses protection from a wide range of spiritual and worldly challenges. Seeking refuge from 'distress and sorrow' (al-hamm wal-hazan) guards our mental well-being. Protection from 'incapacity and laziness' ('ajz wal-kasal) empowers us to take action and fulfill our duties. Shielding ourselves from 'cowardice and stinginess' (al-jubn wal-buhl) cultivates bravery and generosity. Finally, asking Allah to protect us from 'the burden of debt and the subjugation of men' (ghalabatid-dayn wa qahri ar-rijal) brings relief from financial worries and personal oppression. The Prophet ﷺ taught us this after prayer, highlighting the immense spiritual power available to us at that sacred time.
