O Allah, I seek refuge in You from old age and laziness, from old age and cowardice, from old age and decrepitude, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world, and the punishment of the grave.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-harami wal-kasali, wal-harami wal-jubni, wal-harami wal-harami, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatin-dunya, wa 'adhabil-qabri.
When to Read
This powerful dua is recommended to be recited after the *fard* (obligatory) prayers, especially after *Asr* and *Fajr* prayers, as it's a time when supplications are more likely to be accepted. It's a proactive step to seek Allah's protection against negative states that can hinder our worship and daily life.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a clear voice after completing the obligatory prayers. After saying the *salam* (closing salutations), turn your attention to Allah, focusing on the meaning of the words. You can raise your hands slightly as you make this supplication, a common practice when seeking refuge with Allah. Make sure to pronounce the Arabic clearly, reflecting on each word's weight.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication directly addresses several debilitating human weaknesses. Seeking refuge from 'laziness' (*kasal*) is crucial for maintaining our drive in fulfilling our duties to Allah and to ourselves. 'Incapacity' (*haram*) refers to a state of weakness or being unable to perform tasks, whether physically or mentally. The repetition and inclusion of seeking refuge from 'cowardice' (*jubn*) and 'decrepitude' (*haram*, which can also imply frailty) emphasizes the comprehensive protection sought. Finally, seeking refuge from worldly trials and the punishment of the grave shows a holistic concern for both one's present well-being and eternal destiny. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a vital shield against states that can diminish our faith and our effectiveness in this life and the next.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to teach them, in their supplication after the prayer, to say: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from old age, from being overthrown by illness, from laziness, from cowardice, from being overtaken by debt, and from the afflictions of the Dajjal. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire, and I seek refuge in You from the temptations of the wealthy.' Then he said, 'A man will be afflicted with debts in this world until he will be concerned about them.' (Another narration): 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from old age and laziness, from old age and cowardice, from old age and decrepitude, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world, and the punishment of the grave.'
