Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best life is that of the one who clings to the reins of his horse in the path of Allah, with his hair disheveled and his feet dusty. If he is assigned the guard duty, he remains at his post; and if he is assigned the patrol duty, he patrols. He did not seek to show off his deeds to the people, nor did he ask for the reward of it, until he died and met Allah. So Allah will grant him his reward. And the worst of the people is the one who desires to be arrogant and show off his deeds to the people, until he dies and meets Allah. So Allah will hold him accountable for it. And the best of the people is the one who lives his life in the path of Allah and is contented with what Allah has decreed for him, and he is the one who is pleased with Allah as his Lord, and with Islam as his religion, and with Muhammad as his Prophet. And the worst of the people is the one who desires to be arrogant and show off his deeds to the people, until he dies and meets Allah. So Allah will hold him accountable for it." Then he said: "O Allah, make me content with what You have decreed for me, and bless it for me, and make me a good successor after me. And grant me whatever comes after death, and make it easy for me. And grant me the ability to be pleased with Your decree, and to live in a way that leads to blessing, and to have a good life and a good death, and to be raised on the Day of Resurrection from the people of safety in Paradise."
