Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness After Prayer

After Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4657

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You cause to live from among us, keep him living on Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, let him die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him.

Allahumma ighfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudhillana ba'dahu.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is particularly potent when recited after the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah). It can also be a powerful supplication after any obligatory or voluntary prayer, as it encompasses a broad request for mercy and guidance for both the living and the deceased within the Muslim community.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Facing the Qiblah after completing your prayer is a recommended etiquette. Raise your hands slightly, as is customary when making dua. Utter the words clearly, reflecting on each phrase and its profound meaning.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication encapsulates a beautiful spectrum of requests. It acknowledges Allah's knowledge of all His creation, living or deceased, present or absent. By asking for life to be on Islam and death to be on Iman, we seek Allah's ultimate favor for ourselves and our brethren. Crucially, it also asks that we not be deprived of the reward associated with the deceased or led astray after their passing, highlighting the interconnectedness of the Ummah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of collective supplication for the community's spiritual well-being.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you prays for his dead brother and supplicates for him after his death, what he supplicates for is sent to him, and the creatures will be rewarded for it, and the deceased will have a portion of it." Then he mentioned the dua: 'Allahumma ighfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la tudhillana ba'dahu.'
