Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness After Prayer

After Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawood 3201

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our males and our females, our young and our old, our free and our owned slaves. O Allah, whoever You cause to live, let him live on Islam, and whoever You cause to die, let him die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its (his) reward, and do not let us go astray after him.

Allahumma ighfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa dhakariina wa unthana, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa hurrina wa mamlukina. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa'ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu 'alal-Iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu, wa la tudhillana ba'dahu.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is particularly powerful when recited after the obligatory prayers (Salah). It encompasses all Muslims, living and deceased, making it a profound way to connect with the Ummah and send blessings their way. You can also make this dua at other times, like during the funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) or as a general supplication for the deceased at any point.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a clear intention for the mercy of Allah upon the deceased and upon yourself. Raising your hands is generally considered appropriate for supplication, especially when praying for others. Reflect on the universality of this dua – it covers everyone, reminding us of our shared journey and responsibilities as Muslims. Maintain a state of mindfulness and humility as you make this request to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, offers immense benefits. Firstly, it directly asks for forgiveness for the deceased, which is one of the greatest gifts we can give them after they have left this world. Secondly, it seeks Allah's blessing for those who are alive, praying for them to remain steadfast on Islam and Iman. Thirdly, it protects the reciter from going astray after the passing of a pious person or after benefiting from the prayer for the deceased. It embodies the Islamic principle of mutual support and remembrance within the Ummah, ensuring that no Muslim is forgotten.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) taught us to say when praying for a deceased person: 'Allahumma ighfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa dhakariina wa unthana, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa hurrina wa mamlukina. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa'ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu 'alal-Iman. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu, wa la tudhillana ba'dahu.' (Meaning: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present among us and those who are absent, our males and our females, our young and our old, our free and our owned slaves. O Allah, whoever You cause to live, let him live on Islam, and whoever You cause to die, let him die on faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of its (his) reward, and do not let us go astray after him.)
