Dua for the Deceased: Seeking Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness After Prayer

After Prayer
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 3201

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You cause to live from among us, make him live upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, make him die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him.

Allahumma-ghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidinā wa gha'ibinā, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarinā wa unthānā. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyhi 'ala al-Islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fa-tawaffahu 'ala al-iman.

When to Read

This comprehensive supplication is particularly potent when recited after the obligatory prayers. It's a beautiful way to remember the entire Muslim community, both those alive and those who have passed on, and to seek Allah's continued guidance for yourself and your loved ones.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction after completing your prayer. Raise your hands slightly as you would for other supplications, focusing your heart on the meaning of the words. Reflect on the interconnectedness of the Ummah and your responsibility towards them.

Virtues & Benefits

This hadith, narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), highlights the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ profound concern for the Ummah. By including both the living and the deceased, the young and the old, men and women, we are encompassing the entirety of the Muslim community in our prayers. Seeking life upon Islam and death upon Iman ensures a good end for those whom Allah grants life and eventually calls back. The final part, asking not to be deprived of the deceased's reward and not to be led astray after them, shows our reliance on Allah and our hope for continued steadfastness.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you performs the prayer, let him supplicate whatever he wishes.' (In another wording) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you finishes his prayer, let him supplicate whatever he wishes.' Then he mentioned the following supplication: Translation: O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those who are present and those who are absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever You cause to live from among us, make him live upon Islam, and whoever You cause to die from among us, make him die upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us go astray after him. (Sunan Abi Dawud 3201. This narration, while often cited with this specific supplication, is part of a broader teaching about making dua after prayer. The supplication itself is widely known and practiced by the Muslims, with variations found in other authentic narrations referring to general forgiveness and mercy for the deceased.)
