Dua for Remembering Allah's Favors and Expressing Gratitude After Prayer

After Prayer
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 944

Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance.

Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recited immediately after concluding the prayer, whether it's a fard (obligatory) or nafl (voluntary) prayer. It marks the transition from the concentrated worship of Salah back to our daily lives, ensuring we carry the remembrance of Allah with us.

How to Read

Recite this dua quietly after saying the final tasleem (e.g., 'Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullah' on both sides). It’s a moment of reflection, seeking Allah's forgiveness for any shortcomings in the prayer and acknowledging His perfection. The words themselves are beautiful, praising Allah, bearing witness to His oneness, and seeking His pardon. Focus on the meaning as you speak, allowing it to fill your heart with sincerity.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua serves as a beautiful closing for our prayers, a way to purify any flaws or shortcomings that might have occurred during our worship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific phrase, indicating its immense value. It’s a comprehensive acknowledgment of Allah’s glory and a humble request for His mercy. The act of seeking forgiveness here is particularly significant, as it cleanses the slate after we've presented ourselves before our Creator. It helps us remember that even in our best efforts, we are in constant need of His grace.

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never sat down after performing the prayer, or ascended into the heavens, but he raised his voice and said: 'Subhanakallahumma wa bihamdika, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa anta, Astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka.' (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance.)'
