O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijali.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is ideal to recite immediately after completing your obligatory prayers (Fard). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that supplications made after finishing the prayer are highly likely to be answered. It’s a beautiful way to transition from devotion to seeking Allah’s protection against the worries that can weigh down our hearts and minds throughout the day.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's ability to grant refuge. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly after the Tashahhud in prayer, and then recite this dua and the one for seeking refuge in Allah from the punishment of the Hellfire and the punishment of the grave. You can repeat this section of the prayer's conclusion if you wish, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. The key is humility and dependence on Allah.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates a comprehensive plea for protection against common human afflictions that disturb peace of mind. By seeking refuge from 'anxiety and sorrow' (al-hamm wal-hazan), we ask Allah to alleviate mental and emotional distress. Protection from 'incapacity and laziness' ('ajz wal-kasal) helps us stay active and productive. Seeking refuge from 'cowardice and stinginess' (al-jubn wal-buhl) fosters courage and generosity in our character. Finally, asking protection from 'the burden of debt and the overpowering of men' (ghalabatid-dayn wa qahri ar-rijal) seeks financial freedom and liberation from oppression. This comprehensive seeking of refuge helps cultivate a tranquil heart by addressing root causes of disquiet.
