After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2055

اللَّهُمَّ أَطْعِمْنِي وَأَرْوِنِي، وَأَجِرْنِي وَاهْدِنِي، وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْ شَرِّ مَا قَضَيْتَ

O Allah, feed me and give me to drink, and suffice me and guide me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed.

Allahumma at'imni wa arwini, wa ajirni wahdini, wa a'idhni min sharri ma qadayt

When to Read

This dua is recited after finishing a meal. It is a comprehensive supplication seeking provision, guidance, protection, and contentment from Allah (Exalted is He) regarding the blessings received.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of heart after you have finished your meal. It is recommended to say it while seated, reflecting on Allah's (Exalted is He) bounties. The intention is to thank Allah (Exalted is He) for the sustenance and to ask for its benefits to encompass all aspects of our lives, including spiritual clarity and well-being.

Virtues & Benefits

While the specific wording of this dua focuses on general well-being after a meal, the underlying principle of seeking Allah's (Exalted is He) blessings in our food connects to the broader concept of sustenance being a source of strength and clarity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us many duas to thank Allah (Exalted is He) for His blessings. This particular dua encompasses seeking provision, protection from harm, and guidance, all of which contribute to a life filled with divine light. By asking for guidance ('wahdini'), we are implicitly asking for our understanding and perception to be illuminated, allowing us to see the truth and act upon it, which can be seen as a form of 'light for the eyes' in a metaphorical and spiritual sense.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When one of you eats, let him say: Allahumma at'imni wa arwini, wa ajirni wahdini, wa a'idhni min sharri ma qadayt. (O Allah, feed me and give me to drink, and suffice me and guide me, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed).
