Dua After Eating: Seeking Contentment and Freedom from Greed

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5443

All praise is due to Allah, much praise, good and blessed praise. (Our Lord,) we are not self-sufficient, nor is it taken leave of, nor is it free from need of Him.

Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la muwadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbana.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's a moment to pause and reflect on the blessing of sustenance and to express profound gratitude to Allah for providing it.

How to Read

As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught, the most appropriate way to recite this dua is with sincerity and a humble heart. Bring your hands together, perhaps gesturing slightly, and utter these words with full awareness of their meaning. Reflect on the immense blessings you've just received and the reliance you have on Allah for all things. It’s not just about the words, but the feeling of deep appreciation and recognition of your dependence on your Creator.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a powerful way to cultivate contentment and guard against greed. By acknowledging that no one can suffice for Allah, nor can His blessings be done away with, nor can one be independent of Him, we shift our focus from the temporary nature of the food to the eternal source of all sustenance. It helps us appreciate what we have, rather than constantly craving more. It aligns our hearts with the Sunnah, reinforcing our relationship with Allah after a fundamental act of receiving His bounty.
