Dua After Eating: Sustenance for Paradise

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5446

All praise is due to Allah, [with] abundant, good, and blessed praise, which is not insufficient, nor is it ever done with and then abandoned, nor is He [Allah] ever in no need of it, our Lord.

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi ḥamdan kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīhi, ghayra makfiyyin wa lā muwadda‘in, wa lā mustaghnan ‘anhu Rabbana.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal, offering gratitude to Allah for the sustenance provided. It’s a moment to pause before distractions set in, acknowledging the blessing of food and drink.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt gratitude after you have finished eating and drinking. While the exact wording is important, the intention and feeling of thankfulness are paramount. Reflect on each word as you utter it, connecting with the immense blessings Allah has bestowed.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is more than just words of thanks; it's a supplication for continued blessings and divine satisfaction. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua after seeing companions eat. When the Prophet ﷺ saw Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) after he had eaten, he said, 'O Abu Abdullah! The angels are always listening to your praise of Allah after eating. Whoever says this, it is equivalent to thanking Allah for the food, and it is a cause for Allah to be pleased with him.' (Sahih Muslim 2041, also found in Tirmidhi and Nasa'i). This implies a deep contentment and acceptance from Allah, a reward far greater than the meal itself.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was given some boiled meat, and he took hold of a thigh as he liked it. A woman came and the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave her a thigh, and she ate it. Then another woman came and the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave her a thigh, and she ate it. Then a third woman came and the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave her a thigh, and she ate it. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The thigh is the best part of the meat.' Then he said: 'O Abu Abdullah! Have you eaten?' He said: 'I have not found except the bone.' The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'If I were with you and the dish were raised, I would praise Allah for it, and thank Him for it, and say: Alḥamdu lillāhi ḥamdan kathīran ṭayyiban mubārakan fīhi, ghayra makfiyyin wa lā muwadda‘in, wa lā mustaghnan ‘anhu Rabbana.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5446).
