Dua After Eating: Seeking the Blessing of Good Health for the Body and Soul

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5445

Praise be to Allah, much praise, good and blessed praise. (We are) not self-sufficient nor is it ever to be done without, O our Lord.

Alhamdu lillahi hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.

When to Read

This dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It’s a moment to pause and acknowledge Allah's provision, expressing gratitude not just for the food itself, but for the ability to eat and digest it, which is a fundamental aspect of good health.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity and presence of mind. Focus on the meaning of the words, understanding that you are thanking Allah for the nourishment that sustains your body and allows you to continue worshipping Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific wording, so pay attention to pronouncing it correctly and with humility.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses profound gratitude. By thanking Allah with 'much, good, and blessed praise,' we acknowledge that our ability to eat, digest, and benefit from food is entirely from Him. It reflects an understanding that health is a blessing, and that every meal is an opportunity to affirm our dependence on Allah. The phrase 'not self-sufficient nor is it ever to be done without' highlights our constant need for Allah's blessings, including the health to enjoy His provisions. This level of gratitude can lead to Allah's increased blessings and protection, safeguarding our health and well-being.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When the Prophet (ﷺ) finished his meal, he would say: 'Alhamdu lillahi hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubarakan feehi ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna.'" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5445). In another narration, Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever is given food, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.' And whoever is given milk, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and increase us in it.' For there is nothing that can take the place of food or drink except food or drink." (Sunan Abi Dawud 3788, graded Sahih by Al-Albani). While this second hadith is about blessing the food and asking for more, the first mentioned hadith is a specific dua of thanks after eating, emphasizing gratitude for the meal and the health it provides.
