‘Abdullah bin Al-Harith reported: We were with the Prophet ﷺ, and a man from among the people ate. The Prophet ﷺ took his hand, and a man from among the people ate with his left hand. He said: 'Eat with your right hand.' He said: 'I cannot.' He said: 'You cannot?' He said: 'It was preventing me from eating (i.e. from the food).' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is what prevents you from eating.' The narrator said: He said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took his hand and he did not take it, and the man ate with his left hand.' He said: 'He did not take his hand, and the man ate with his left hand.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Eat with your right hand.' He said: 'I cannot.' He said: 'You cannot?' He said: 'It was preventing me from eating.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'This is what prevents you from eating.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Indeed, Satan eats and drinks with his left hand.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Indeed, Allah is pleased with the servant who praises Him after eating, and praises Him after drinking.' [Sahih Muslim 2020b relates a similar hadith concerning eating with the left hand, and Sahih Muslim 2049 mentions the Prophet’s ﷺ encouragement to praise Allah after eating and drinking]. The specific wording of the dua is from Sahih al-Bukhari 5444, which is narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) who said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you eats, he should say: 'All praise is for Allah who has fed him, clothed him and made him such that he is able to have a living.' And when he finishes eating, he should say: 'All praise is for Allah, [praise that is] abundant, good, and blessed, [praise] which cannot be sufficed or bid farewell to, or dispensed with, O our Lord.''
