Dua After Eating: Seeking Protection from the Evil of the Tongue

After Eating
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3280

In the name of Allah. O Allah, to You is praise until You are pleased, and to You is praise when You are pleased, and to You is praise after contentment. O Allah, our Lord, to You is praise as is befitting the Majesty of Your Countenance and the Greatness of Your Authority. O Allah, feed those who have fed us, and give drink to those who have given us drink, and answer our supplications, and forgive our sins, and forgive our parents. O Allah, make this sustenance a lasting blessing, and do not change it with another blessing, nor turn it into a calamity. Suffice us with Your lawful provision against Your unlawful, and enrich us with Your bounty, making us independent of all except You. And protect us, by Allah, from the accursed Satan, and from every devil, and every harmful and destructive creature.

Allahumma at'im man at'amana, wasqi man saqana, wa ajib da'watana, waghfir dhunubana, waghfir li-abawayna.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal. It's a beautiful way to express gratitude for the food and seek Allah's protection for oneself and one's family.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and presence of heart, reflecting on each phrase. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) and then utter the supplication. The wording is comprehensive, covering gratitude, requests for sustenance, forgiveness, and protection. Pay particular attention to the part seeking refuge from Satan and harmful creatures, which addresses the 'evil of the tongue' by seeking a shield against all forms of evil influences.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is rich in blessings. It expresses profound gratitude to Allah for the sustenance provided. It also includes a powerful plea for the well-being of the person who provided the meal, as well as for one's own sins and those of their parents. Crucially, it asks Allah to make the sustenance a lasting blessing, not something that leads to divine displeasure or trials. The final part is a strong invocation for protection against Satan and all manner of harmful entities, which implicitly guards against the misuses of the tongue, such as backbiting, slander, and false speech, by seeking a general shield against evil influences.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Anas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Allah is pleased with His slave, or is pleased with His servant, when he eats something and thanks Allah for it, or drinks something and thanks Allah for it." (Sahih Muslim 2232). While the specific dua above is found in Ibn Majah, it encapsulates the spirit of gratitude and seeking protection that is central to Islamic teachings after a meal, drawing from the broader Sunnah of seeking Allah's refuge.
