Dua After Eating: Seeking Protection from the Evil of Food

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5446

Praise is to Allah, much praise, good and blessed praise. We have no need [of it], nor is it to be left, nor is it [possible to be] independent of it, our Lord.

Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbana.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited immediately after finishing a meal, as a profound expression of gratitude and a request for continued blessings.

How to Read

Recite this heartfelt supplication after you have finished eating and drinking. It's a moment to pause, reflect on Allah's bounty, and utter these words of praise and acknowledgement. The intention is to acknowledge that no matter how much we eat or how satisfied we feel, true sustenance and sufficiency come from Allah alone.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua acknowledges Allah's perfect provision and our complete reliance on Him. It encompasses gratitude not just for the food itself, but for the entire system of sustenance that Allah provides and sustains. By reciting it, we affirm that our Lord's blessings are inexhaustible and ever-present, seeking His continued favor and protection. It embodies a deep sense of humility and thankfulness, recognizing that every bite is a gift that requires sincere appreciation.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'When any of you eats food, he should say: Al-hamdu lillahi allathee wajadahu, albasani, rizqan min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah (Praise is to Allah Who found it and clothed me with it, as a provision without any power or strength from my side).' And when he finishes it, he should say: Al-hamdu lillahi allathee at'amahu wa razaqahu min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah (Praise is to Allah Who fed me and provided me with it, without any power or strength from my side). This wording of the dua after eating is also narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari 5446 as: 'Al-hamdu lillahi hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbana.' (Praise is to Allah, much praise, good and blessed praise. We have no need [of it], nor is it to be left, nor is it [possible to be] independent of it, our Lord.) Both forms are excellent expressions of gratitude.
