Dua After Eating: Seeking Protection from Gluttony and Waste

After Eating
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5443

Praise be to Allah, [such] abundant, pure, and blessed praise, [praise] that is never insufficient, nor is it ever taken leave of, nor is it ever dispensed with, our Lord.

Al-hamdulillah hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna

When to Read

Recite this dua immediately after finishing your meal. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's blessings and express gratitude for the sustenance provided.

How to Read

Say this dua with sincerity and a heart full of gratitude. It's about recognizing that every blessing, especially food, comes from Allah. Reflect on the meaning of the words as you say them.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, covers several aspects of gratitude. Firstly, it goes beyond a simple 'Alhamdulillah' to offer 'abundant, pure, and blessed praise,' showing a deeper level of appreciation for the meal. Secondly, by stating the praise is 'never insufficient, nor is it ever taken leave of, nor is it ever dispensed with,' we acknowledge that Allah's blessings are continuous and essential, and our praise should reflect that. This earnest gratitude can protect us from the negative habits associated with food, such as greed, gluttony, and wastefulness, by keeping our focus on the Giver, not just the gift. It reminds us that food is a trust from Allah, and we should be mindful of how we consume and treat it.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When any of you eats, he should say: 'Al-hamdulillah alladhi kafani wa awlani, wa qad dalahu, wa jima'a li. (Praise be to Allah Who sufficed me and gave me what I need, and Who gave me sustenance and gathered [my provisions] for me).' Or (he may say): 'Al-hamdulillah 'ala ni'matil-Islam wa 'ala ma razaqni (Praise be to Allah for the blessing of Islam and for what He has provided for me).' And the Prophet ﷺ taught his companions a group of words, and Abdullah bin Ghannam said: 'The Prophet ﷺ taught us a group of words and he instructed us to teach them to our wives and our children and our servants, and he said: 'Say: 'Al-hamdulillah hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan feehi, ghaira makfiyyin wa la mawadda'in wa la mustaghnan 'anhu Rabbuna. (Praise be to Allah, [such] abundant, pure, and blessed praise, [praise] that is never insufficient, nor is it ever taken leave of, nor is it ever dispensed with, our Lord).''
