سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ

Glory be to Him Whom the thunder glorifies by praising Him, and the angels too, out of awe of Him.

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when one witnesses lightning and hears thunder. It's a moment where the immense power of Allah (SWT) is vividly displayed, and this invocation helps us acknowledge His might and seek His protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and contemplation. Focus on the meaning of the words as you say them, reflecting on Allah's greatness as shown through the natural phenomena. It's not about a specific number of times, but about genuine remembrance and awe.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a beautiful way to remember Allah's power and majesty during intense weather. It teaches us humility in the face of creation and encourages awe that is rooted in knowing our Creator. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this to remind us that even the thunder, which can inspire fear, is engaged in glorifying Allah. This practice helps turn moments of potential fear into opportunities for remembrance and reflection on Allah's might.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): The Prophet ﷺ did not recite his prayers, nor did he fast, nor did he feel his way forward (in darkness) nor did he feel the floodwaters, but he would raise his voice saying: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk" (Here I am, O Allah, here I am). And it is related that when the Prophet ﷺ heard thunder, he would give up talking and say: "Subhanalladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bihamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min khifatih" (Glory be to Him Whom the thunder glorifies by praising Him, and the angels too, out of awe of Him).
