Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1009

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when there is a lack of rain and the land is suffering from drought. It is part of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ practice of seeking rain, known as Salat al-Istisqa. It is a direct plea to Allah for His mercy and provision.

How to Read

This is a simple yet profound supplication. It should be recited with sincerity, humility, and a full heart, recognizing that rain is a blessing solely from Allah. The Prophet ﷺ would often raise his hands while making this dua. Ideally, this dua is made collectively during the Salat al-Istisqa, but it can also be made individually when drought conditions are severe.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua during a drought is a direct act of worship and reliance on Allah. It reflects our acknowledgment of His power over all creation and His role as the ultimate Provider. Allah responds to the supplications of His servants, especially when they turn to Him in times of need. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The believer's supplication is a weapon which never fails." (Recorded in Al-Bazzar, authenticated by Al-Albani). Furthermore, seeking rain is a communal responsibility. The Prophet ﷺ taught us that rain is a mercy from Allah, and its absence can be a sign of our own shortcomings. By supplicating, we are not only asking for rain but also for forgiveness and a return to Allah's favor.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked to invoke Allah for rain, and he said: 'He will bring it and it will be a joyous rain.' Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'O Allah, send rain for them, bestow it upon them, and let it be a nourishing rain.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1009). Another narration from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that a man entered the mosque on a Friday and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! The animals have perished and the roads are cut off; supplicate Allah to give us rain.' So, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) supplicated, and then raised his hands and it was such a cloudy sky that it started raining immediately. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1010).
