Weather & Nature
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1029

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.

Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna

When to Read

This dua is specifically for times of drought and when rain is scarce. It should be recited with earnestness and sincerity when the land is parched and the crops are failing. It is also appropriate to recite during the Istisqa prayer, the prayer for rain.

How to Read

This is a direct supplication to Allah. It should be recited with a raised voice, facing the Qiblah (direction of prayer), with hands extended. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often raise his hands to the shoulder or higher when making such supplications. It is also customary, after this initial dua, to make other supplications for rain, seeking forgiveness for sins, and acknowledging Allah's power. The Prophet ﷺ also mentioned turning the cloak inside out as a symbolic act during the Istisqa prayer, though the primary focus is the dua itself.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking rain is not merely a physical necessity but an act of worship and reliance on Allah. It acknowledges His absolute control over the elements and His role as the ultimate Provider. The Quran states: 'And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings preceding His mercy, and We send down from the heavens pure water. That We may give life thereby to a lifeless land and provide it to what We have created of livestock and many people.' (Al-Furqan 25:48-49). Reciting this dua with conviction reinforces our dependence on Allah and seeks His mercy, which brings life and sustenance to the earth.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked to invoke Allah for rain during the drought. He said: 'Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, sent the wind and the clouds, and they produced sparks and lightning and thunder. Then it rained heavily, and the people went out in the rain. On the next Friday, they asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to invoke Allah for rain. He said: 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' Then Allah sent the wind and the clouds, and they produced sparks and lightning and thunder. Then it rained heavily, and the people went out in the rain. On the next Friday, they asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to invoke Allah for rain. He said: 'O Allah, on the hills and the mountains, and the valleys, and the places where plants grow.' Then Allah sent the wind and the clouds, and they produced sparks and lightning and thunder. It rained like it rained on the day of the flood. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'People were asking the Prophet (ﷺ) for rain, and he would say: 'Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna' (O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain).
