اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This supplication is recited during the prayer of Istisqa (seeking rain) when the land is dry and in need of water. It can also be recited individually during times of drought.
How to Read
This dua is typically recited after the Eid prayer during the Istisqa prayer, often with hands raised and facing the Qiblah, just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ did. During the sermon, he would face the Qiblah and supplicate with his hands raised high. Even when reciting individually, one should face the Qiblah, raise their hands, and implore Allah with sincerity and humility.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through Istisqa is a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It demonstrates our reliance on Allah for all provisions, including the essential element of water. The Quran emphasizes Allah's role as the provider of rain, stating: "And it is He who sends down rain after they had despaired and spreads His mercy. And He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy." (Ash-Shura 42:28). Experiencing and being grateful for rain is a means of increased blessings, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "No people withhold the Zakat of their wealth, but they are deprived of rain. Were it not for the animals, they would not be rained upon." (Ibn Majah 4019, graded Sahih by Al-Albani). This highlights the connection between our righteous deeds and Allah's blessings.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The man said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Our wealth has been destroyed and our children are hungry, so please pray to Allah for us.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, 'O Allah! Give us rain. O Allah! Give us rain. O Allah! Give us rain.' He added, 'There are no more than five or six such things (I.e. Allah will not punish them for 6 things). Then he said, 'O Allah, let it be a rain of mercy and not a rain of punishment.' It was raining as if it were a curtain, and then it rained continuously from the next Friday till the next Friday. A man who had entered the mosque on the next Friday said, 'O Allah's Messenger! Our houses have been demolished because of the rain and our fields are flooded.' So the Prophet (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, 'O Allah! Around us and not on us. O Allah! On the plateaus and the hills, and the ravines and the places where plants grow.' So the rain stopped and cleared away from Medina. Sahih al-Bukhari 6306
