Dua When Wearing New Clothes

Wearing Clothes
Sahih HadithJami' at-Tirmidhi 1767

O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You are the One Who clothed me with it. I ask You for its good, and the good for which it was made. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil for which it was made.

Allahumma lakal-hamd. Anta kasawtanihi. As'aluka khairahu wa khaira ma suni'a lahu, wa a'udhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni'a lahu.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is specifically recited when you put on a **new garment** for the first time. It is a moment to pause, express gratitude to Allah for His provision, and seek His blessings for the clothing. While this specific dua is for new clothes, the underlying principles of gratitude, seeking good, and seeking refuge from evil can inspire a general mindfulness about all our clothing choices, connecting them to Islamic modesty and purpose.

How to Read

Recite this dua immediately after putting on your new garment. Approach it with a heartfelt sense of **gratitude** to Allah, recognizing that all provision comes from Him. Reflect on the meaning of the words: you are asking Allah for the goodness inherently in the garment and its intended purpose (which, for Muslims, always includes modesty and protection), and you are seeking refuge from any potential harm or misuse it might lead to.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua allows us to transform a mundane act into an **act of worship**. It helps us: 1. **Express Gratitude:** Acknowledge Allah's bounties and thank Him for the blessing of clothing, which protects us and beautifies us. 2. **Seek Blessings:** Ask Allah to bless the garment and ensure it serves its righteous purpose, including the purpose of Islamic modesty and decency. 3. **Seek Protection:** Guard against any evil associated with the garment, such as vanity, arrogance, or leading to immodesty and sin. By engaging with this dua, we align our intention with Allah's pleasure, ensuring our attire becomes a means of earning reward and fulfilling His commands concerning modesty.

Narrated Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri: "When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put on a new garment, he would name it with its name, a shirt or a cloak, then he would say: 'O Allah, to You belongs all praise. You are the One Who clothed me with it. I ask You for its good, and the good for which it was made. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil for which it was made.'"
