Dua for Wearing New Clothes: Seeking Allah's Protection

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is for Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

When to Read

This dua is recited when wearing a new garment. It's a beautiful way to acknowledge Allah's blessings upon us for providing new clothes, recognizing that this provision comes solely from Him, not our own might. This act of gratitude can serve as a shield, as the Prophet ﷺ taught us that actions done with sincere remembrance of Allah are a means of protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua once after putting on a new piece of clothing. It's recommended to say it with a sense of humility and gratitude, reflecting on Allah's immense favor. You can say it while looking at the garment, or after you've finished dressing.

Virtues & Benefits

Wearing new clothes is a blessing from Allah. By reciting this dua, we express our thankfulness for this blessing, acknowledging that it is from Allah alone. This recognition of His favor is a form of worship that can bring His protection. The Prophet ﷺ also said: "Whoever wears a garment and says: 'Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with that which covers my nakedness and adorns me in my life,' then Allah will forgive him his previous sins." (Tirmidhi 3580). While this specific wording is for new clothes, the underlying principle of thanking Allah for covering and adorning us applies broadly. Expressing gratitude is a way to draw closer to Allah and invite His continuous blessings and protection against any ill will or negative energy.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore a new garment, he would mention its name – whether a shirt or a turban – and then he would say: 'Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.' (All praise is for Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from my side.)' And when he took off a garment, he would say: 'Alhamdulillah, O Allah, may You make it an 'afiyah (a means of well-being) for me.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023).
