Dua When Changing Clothes: Seeking Purity and Renewal

Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

All praise is due to Allah, Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, without any strength or power from my side.

When to Read

This dua is recited when putting on new clothes or when changing into any garment. It's a moment to reflect on Allah's blessings, recognizing that even the simplest things like clothing are a provision from Him.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere gratitude after you have fully put on the new or changed garment. Ensure your intention is to acknowledge Allah's grace for this provision. It's recommended to say it while standing, as you are appreciating the provision that allows you to stand comfortably.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua teaches us humility and dependence on Allah. By attributing the provision of clothing to Him alone, we acknowledge that no achievement or strength of our own is the true source. It fosters gratitude, reminding us that every blessing, big or small, comes from our Creator. This mindset strengthens our connection with Allah and purifies our intentions, viewing even mundane actions as acts of worship.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to put on a new garment, he would mention its name (e.g. a shirt or a cloak) and say: (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023, Graded Hasan by some scholars). Tirmidhi also narrated a similar hadith: When the Prophet ﷺ wore a new shirt, he would say: 'O Allah, to You be praise, You have clothed me. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.' Then when he took it off, he would say: 'O Allah, to You be praise.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767, Graded Sahih). The first version is more commonly cited specifically for putting on clothes.
