Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud / Sunan At-Tirmidhi 4023 / 1767

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it to me without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillah alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when wearing new clothes, whether it's a new shirt, a new pair of trousers, or any garment you're putting on for the first time. It's a moment to pause and reflect on Allah's blessings.

How to Read

As you put on the new garment, stand and recite this dua. Feel the fabric, acknowledge the blessing of having clothes to cover your 'awrah and protect you, and then consciously direct your intention towards seeking Allah's forgiveness for any past sins related to the misuse of your eyes. This isn't just about the words; it's about the mindful connection to Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses several profound benefits. Firstly, it expresses immense gratitude to Allah for the provision of clothing, a basic necessity we often take for granted. It reminds us that all sustenance and blessings come from Him alone, not from our own efforts. Secondly, by reciting it, we are implicitly seeking Allah's forgiveness. The act of wearing new clothes can sometimes be associated with vanity or looking at things we shouldn't. This dua serves as a powerful spiritual reset, a way to purify our intentions and seek cleansing for any 'sins of the eyes' – whether it was glancing at something impermissible or harboring feelings of envy or arrogance related to attire. It aligns our outward appearance with an inward state of humility and reliance on Allah.

Source & Authentication

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wore a new garment, he would mention its name, whether it was a shirt or a turban. Then he would say: 'O Allah, You are the One Who clothed me. I ask You for its good and the good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.' Then when he wore it, he would say: 'All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it to me without any strength or power from myself.'
