Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4022

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part.

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani hadhath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghairi hawlin minni wa la quwwah

When to Read

This dua is recited when putting on new clothes. It is a beautiful expression of gratitude to Allah for blessing us with attire, acknowledging that this provision comes solely from His mercy and not from our own might.

How to Read

Upon wearing a new garment, stand and say this dua. It's an acknowledgment of Allah's grace, so utter it with sincere gratitude and humility. Some scholars mention that after saying this, one should also praise Allah and ask Him for the good of it and the good of what it was made for, and seek refuge in Him from the evil of it and the evil of what it was made for. A complementary dua for new clothes is also mentioned by Al-Bukhari, where the Prophet ﷺ would say for a new garment: 'O Allah, grant me good of it and good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6307). Combining these sentiments truly encompasses the spirit of thankfulness and seeking protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua beautifully encapsulates several profound spiritual benefits: 1. **Expressing Gratitude:** It directly thanks Allah for the blessing of clothing, a fundamental need and comfort He has provided. 2. **Acknowledging Divine Provision:** It reminds us that all blessings, including sustenance and the ability to acquire them, are from Allah, fostering humility and reliance on Him. 3. **Seeking Good:** By acknowledging the source of the blessing, we open ourselves to receiving the goodness associated with it and its purpose. 4. **Preventing Arrogance:** Recognizing that clothing is not due to our own strength guards against pride and vanity often associated with new possessions. 5. **Setting a Positive Intent:** It establishes a practice of remembrance (dhikr) at the very moment of adorning oneself, setting a spiritual tone for wearing the garment.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person wears a new garment, he should say: All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4022, Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1767). Another related narration is: 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever wears a new garment, and says: 'All praise is due to Allah Who has clothed me with (this garment) and provided it for me without any strength or power on my part,' then Allah will forgive him for his sins that have passed.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 4023). And for new clothes, Al-Bukhari narrated: 'When the Prophet ﷺ wore a new garment, he would mention it by name, be it a shirt, or a turban, and then say: 'O Allah, grant me good of it and good of what it was made for, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of what it was made for.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6307).
