Wearing Clothes
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4023

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا الثَّوْبَ وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.

Alhamdulillahilladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwatin.

When to Read

This dua should be recited immediately after putting on a new garment, whether it's a shirt, trousers, a cloak, or any other item of clothing. It’s a moment to pause and reflect, not just on the physical comfort of the new clothing, but on the grace of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) that made it possible.

How to Read

Recite this supplication with sincerity, acknowledging that all blessings come from Allah. It’s best recited right after you’ve finished dressing in the new item. You can say it softly to yourself. The intention behind it is key: recognizing Allah's provision and your dependence on Him.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua is a beautiful act of acknowledging Allah's bounty. It reminds us that even seemingly simple blessings like new clothes are from Him, and not a result of our own might. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua to foster humility and gratitude. By saying this, we train ourselves to see Allah's hand in all aspects of our lives, fostering a deeper connection with our Creator and earning His pleasure.

Source & Authentication

Umm Khalid bint Khalid narrated that she came to the Prophet ﷺ wearing a garment with some yellow on it. The Prophet ﷺ looked at her and said: 'O Umm Khalid, wear it until it is worn out, then wear it until it is worn out.' Then he said: 'The believers wear the same clothes, and their menfolk pray for their womenfolk, and the womenfolk pray for their menfolk. So, O Allah, forgive them and grant them sustenance from it. (He then mentioned a garment of his own made of Egyptian linen). Then he said: 'All praise is due to Allah Who clothed me with this garment and provided it for me without any strength or power from myself.'
